5Terrific Improvement  Aug 22, 2011
By James Q. Talley "VTFirefly911"
Yes, the new intermediate steering shaft sat around for 9 months until I got around to putting it in... but what a difference! I had the classic GM steering wheel *clunk* in my 2003 Sierra. GMC had done something about it once at about 30,000 miles, but it came back before too long and now that my truck has 111,000 miles on it I felt compelled to try this replacement. Installation was pretty easy. The nuts holding the gas pedal bracket and the bracket itself must be removed to get the old shaft out, but that's a quick process.

To ease installation, I did grind a small chamfer on the end of the shaft that goes into the engine compartment. I don't believe that the lower steering shaft female receptacle was deformed, the Dorman shaft is just a really tight fit. I also had to grab the shaft with a pair of locking pliers and tap the shaft into position with a hammer. Does this mean that the part didn't fit properly? I don't think so... I'm thrilled that it fit snugly. I'm hoping this gets rid of the steering clunk once and for all.

Workmanship seemed good and the universal joint operated smoothly and appeared to be adequately lubricated. I'm happy with both the quality and the price.

5Great Price - working flawlessly so far! Thanks Dorman and Amazon!  Jul 22, 2011
By Dad who likes toys too
After about two years of irritation with the clunking and rattling of the steering (during low speed turns)in my 2003 Suburban, I bought the Dorman intermediate steering shaft based on the reviews and low price on Amazon. Shipping was free and fast. I also purchased the anti-rotation locking pin, but it was really not necessary because a bungee cord worked fine. The installation was a little difficult because I followed the directions which said to keep the wheels straight. The nuts were not easily accessible when the wheel was straight. I simply turned the wheel to allow access to the nut in the engine bay - which I loosened to just finger tight. Then I turned the wheel to allow access to the nut under the dash. This worked for me. After that, getting the old shaft out was a breeze, but I did have to move the gas pedal. So far, the new shaft has no movement, rattling, or clunk. Thanks Dorman and Amazon. Now, if you could make affordable rear AC lines for the Suburban...

5Great Price-Fixed the Clunk  May 13, 2011
By Kennymack
I recently installed this shaft in my 04 Sierra 1500. Very simple procedure. I used the shoulder harness through the steering wheel to keep it straight and locked. Steering is now tighter and no clunking. This has to be one of the cheapest fixes I've done. Thanks Amazon!

5FINALLY! Getting the SHAFT that works!!  Nov 17, 2010
By AMD
Just received the DORMAN ISS last night...had high hopes as I had the clunking original replaced by a shop not knowing how easy it was to do. $160 later with a re-designed GM shaft and that didn't last...This one was so heavy duty compare to OEM I had a VERY good feeling about it....The Double D design and thickness was very impressive....it took me 35 minutes to remove the clunker and install this new one by Dorman...Truck is so solid feeling and quiet now......wish I had known earlier about this..DO IT!!! if you can turn a 15mm wrench..you are all set...don't bother to remove gas pedal hardware as it comes right out with plenty of room from inside the cab..LOVE IT!

5If you clunk, buy this part  Apr 16, 2010
By M. Teets
I replaced my clunking 2003 Avalanche intermediate shaft with this part today. The GM greasing solution does not work. You only need a 15mm box end wrench to replace this part. Duct tape your steering wheel to the shift lever so it doesn't rotate when the shaft is removed. There is a captive nut on one side of the shaft, remove from the bolt side. One bolt is inside the truck, one outside. Unplug the blue plug that is in the way on the bottom of the dash. Remove the shaft toward the inside of the truck with a bit of maneuvering. You may need a towel to wipe up the extra grease from the dealers attempt to quiet this noise :-0 Install in the reverse order. No more clunking. Honestly takes 30-40 minutes from the time you pop the hood.
